Post Mix

A Step-by-Step Guide

What is Post mix?

Post Mix, also known as Postcrete, Post Concrete or Ready Mix, is a convenient option for setting fence posts. With its finely blended composition of cement and ballast, it provides a strong foundation for timber, concrete, or metal posts. This ready-mixed concrete saves time and effort, ensuring a reliable and durable installation for various types of fencing projects.

How do I use post mix?

The first step in setting up a sturdy fence is digging the hole to match the post size. For 100mm fence posts, a depth of 600mm is ideal. This ensures stability and durability for your fence structure.

Place the post into the hole. Pour water into the hole until it is around 1/3 full.

Pour the post mix into the hole, ensure that you continue until no water is visible. If you spot any dry powder, simply add a little more water to achieve the desired consistency.

Be sure not to add too much water as this will drastically change the drying time!

Agitate the mixture with a stick, or trowel, until fully incorporated and to ensure no air bubbles.

Before the post mix begins to set, make sure to adjust the post into the correct position. Use a spirit level to ensure the post is straight.

How long does it take to set?

Post Mix typically sets within 5-10 minutes after water is added, but it’s crucial to wait at least 4 hours before applying any stress or pressure to the post. This waiting period allows the mix to fully set and ensures the stability and durability of the post once it’s in place.

In comparison, regular concrete typically requires a few hours if not days to reach the same consistency after the mixture is poured.

How much post mix do I need?

The amount of Post Mix required depends on the hole’s dimensions. Typically, for a standard fence post, you’ll need around one and a half bags.

When setting a gate post, which need to withstand the continuous movement and stress of the gate, it will require between 2 – 4 bags.

Can I mix Post Mix before hand?

Due to the fast-setting process of Post Mix Concrete, you should never mix this product in a bucket. You should mix Post Mix with water directly into the hole that you are working on.

Tips to help you use your post mix more efficiently.

Safety Measures: Wearing a face mask and gloves when handling post mix helps prevent dust irritation and potential respiratory issues.

Drainage: Adding a layer of gravel at the bottom of the hole before placing the post can help improve drainage in areas with poor soil. The gravel allows excess water to drain away from the post, reducing the risk of rot and instability. This simple step can make a big difference in the longevity and stability of your posts, especially in areas prone to waterlogging.

How much to use: To prevent water from collecting at the base of the post, it’s a good idea to ensure that enough concrete is poured so that it rises slightly above ground level.
